HarperCollins is one of the UK's foremost, diverse and innovative multi-platform publishers. We publish a wide range of books, from cutting-edge contemporary fiction, to block-busting thrillers and from fantasy literature to children's literature and enduring classics. We also publish a great selection of non-fiction titles, including history, celebrity memoirs, biographies, popular science, dictionaries, maps, reference titles and education books, and our digital business is thriving. With nearly 200 years of history, we publish some of the world's foremost authors, from Nobel prize-winners to worldwide bestsellers. In addition, we also publish the works of Agatha Christie, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.

Voyager is the home of fantasy and science fiction at HarperCollins and is one of the world's greatest genre lists. The team are looking for an Editor. This is a great opportunity for someone with previous experience in publishing with an interest in, and love for, the genre, including a keen interest in both the industry and wider media competitors.

  • Act as point of contact for a stable of authors as agreed, across genres
  • Work on structural and line edits, as well as managing freelancers
  • Maintain strong market knowledge and a thorough understanding of fantasy/horror/sf genres
  • Brief jackets and liaise with designers, seeing covers through from start to finish
  • Copywrite and check sales/marketing material
  • Create vision documents for new acquisitions and ongoing authors
  • Take ownership of metadata/AIs for Voyager authors
  • Write cover/catalogue/Bookseller/marketing copy as required and present where necessary
  • Read, report, circulate and reject submissions as required
  • Support Publishing Director on a number of brand authors at busy times
  • Create content for and present titles at appropriate meetings/pitches
  • Work to ensure best in class metadata at all times
  • Work in conjunction with the Marketing team to create innovative campaigns
  • Ensure a strong awareness of what physical retailers are looking for
  • Ensure internal stakeholders have all the advance sales information they require
  • Work in conjunction with Publicity on author events/launches where necessary
  • Attend launches and festivals as required
  • Liaise with relevant teams to ensure correct permissions for relevant material
  • Act as a Voyager champion across the division and company

Key Skills/Experience
  • Demonstrable experience of working within the publishing industry
  • Experience working at assistant editor level at least (or equivalent)
  • Sound market knowledge of commercial fiction
  • Experience of desk editing processes
  • Full knowledge of publishing processes
  • Experience of working directly with authors
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Takes initiative

We're based in the News Building which we share with our News UK and Dow Jones colleagues in the newly-established London Bridge Quarter, opposite the famous Borough Market. Our new open-plan office has amazing views across London, and includes a variety of break-out areas to aid inspiration and a collaborative approach, a multi-media suite, and a fabulous canteen floor and book shop.
