Our Children's department is looking for an Assistant Editor. A key member of the editorial team, this role provides editorial support to the commissioning team and is responsible for project managing titles across all areas of the fiction list. This is not a commissioning role, but the position offers a rare opportunity for an accurate, organised, efficient and creative team-player to step into a challenging Assistant Editor's role in a power-house fiction team.


  • Supporting the commissioning team across the list, project managing titles from manuscript through to publication under sponsoring editor's guidance
  • Ensure titles are delivered on time, to budget and to specification
  • Desk editorial responsibilities - proofreading, some copyediting, copywriting - for a range of fiction titles, including digital formats
  • Desk editorial support for members of the commissioning team as needed
  • Writing design briefs with guidance from sponsoring editor
  • Covers to be briefed on time and within context of the market on given titles
  • Reading and reporting on submissions and competitor titles
  • Providing timely, insightful feedback to the commissioning team taking into consideration market context and HarperCollins' forward publishing strategy
  • Market research as required by the senior editorial team including Bookscan, retailer visits, picture and competitor research
  • Providing supporting materials for strategic planning and acquisitions as required by the Senior editorial team
  • Manage relevant editorial listings (AIS, BIC, Acquisitions, P&Ls) to ensure accurate and up-to-date title/list information is available internally and externally
  • Liaising with authors, artists and agents and managing freelance copyeditors and proofreaders
  • Being part of a team that prides itself on excellent author care and strong publisher-agent relations
  • Responsibility for upkeep of correction files, attending the reprint meetings, marking up and checking reprints in progress, including corrections, updating end matter etc with support from the Editorial Assistant
  • Coordinating editorial content for all bookfair catalogues, and proofreading and imputing corrections

Key Skills/Experience

  • Strong editorial experience in children's books, with demonstrable experience
  • Exceptional proofreading skills
  • Solid understanding of copyediting process
  • Extremely organised, efficient and self-motivated
  • Strong author care and interpersonal skills
  • Good design eye
  • Being a key energetic and positive member of vibrant and creative editorial team; flair and passion for children's fiction; can-do attitude

We're based in the News Building which we share with our News UK and Dow Jones colleagues in the newly-established London Bridge Quarter, opposite the famous Borough Market.
